Program Overview

The University of Manitoba English Language Centre provides instruction in academic English. Students can meet the language requirement of the University of Manitoba by successfully completing Level 5. Over 90% of ELC students go on to study at the graduate or undergraduate level. Instructors have completed graduate work in TESL.


  • Maximum class size is 15 in Levels 1-4 and 13 in Level 5
  • Instructors have completed graduate work in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) and have experience in teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
  • All five levels focus on English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
  • Level 5 meets the language requirement for admission to undergraduate and graduate programs
  • The ELC is a part of Enrolment Services together with the Admissions and Student Recruitment offices of the University of Manitoba. The University of Manitoba was founded in 1877 and was the first university to open in western Canada

    Facilities and Location

    The ELC is on the 274-hectare Fort Garry Campus in south Winnipeg. Students can enjoy world-class athletic facilities on campus or travel 20 minutes to visit the city's largest mall. Winnipeg's 700,000 people include over 40 ethnic groups and enjoy excellent local and international entertainment as well as a variety of professional sports.
