DAWSON COLLEGE

DAWSON COLLEGE

Mission Statement:

Although Dawson College is located on the border of Westmount and the city of Montreal, and is within walking distance of the heart of downtown, the campus itself is a surprising retreat. The beautiful building is surrounded by 12 acres of lawns, trees and gardens. When Dawson College opened its doors in the fall of 1969, 1,200 students were admitted to the first English-language institution in Quebec's new network of CEGEPs (Collèges d'enseignement général et professionnel). Since then, the student population has grown. There are now some 7,000 day students and 3,500 evening students, enrolled in over 50 different programs of study. Dawson's student body reflects the international character of Montreal. Only about half the students claim English as their mother tongue, and many students speak not only one other language, but two or even three. The College was named in honour of Sir William Dawson, the renowned geologist who was Principal of McGill University from 1855 to 1893.
