 Program Overview  study in america

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Manitoba (UofM) offers four-year programs leading to a bachelor of science (BSc) degree in engineering. All undergraduate engineering programs are fully accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board, satisfying academic preparation requirements for membership in the professional licensing bodies of both Canada and the United States.
Engineering programs at the UofM integrate basic sciences, mathematics and engineering principles with study options in humanities, social sciences and management. The first year of study is common to all engineering programs. In the second year, students specialize in one of six branches of engineering: biosystems, civil, computer, electrical, manufacturing or mechanical engineering. In civil and biosystems engineering, students may elect to complete an environmental engineering option, while mechanical engineering students may elect to complete an aerospace engineering option.
Students advance through the undergraduate engineering program by achieving a C grade or better. All programs have a design focus. The final year includes a capstone design project. A range of electives is offered, enabling students to complement their engineering studies with other subjects of interest.
Paid cooperative education opportunities are available in the civil, manufacturing, mechanical and biosystems engineering programs. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers 12 -to 16-month paid internships, which provide students with valuable technical and industry experience. International work and student exchange programs are available in the US, France, Germany, Britain, Mexico and Spain. UofM's engineering faculty participates in transfer programs with the University of North Dakota for students who wish to pursue degrees in geomatics engineering, chemical engineering and geological engineering.
Engineering students are active in the student council and eight student technical societies, as well as the Manitoba Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), which has the largest student membership in all of Canada.
One of the strategic priorities of the faculty is to produce "design-ready" graduates. The faculty is now a leader in this area and requires students to start design in first year. The National Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) awarded the UofM a Research Chair in Engineering Design. The faculty's mandate is to advance the role of engineering design in undergraduate and graduate programs.
The UofM's efforts to produce "design-ready" graduates has led to the appointment of seven Engineers-in-Residence. Currently, these individuals assist professors in designing courses, advise on lab experiments to ensure relevance, and work with students on their design projects.

Buildings and Facilities  study in america

The Faculty of Engineering is supported by an extensive range of laboratory and computer facilities. More than 40 labs are devoted to research in chemical, biomedical, communication and signal processing, computer electronics, geotechnical, physics, metallurgical, mechanical and electrical engineering. In addition, students have access to three microwave anechoic chambers, a high voltage and power transmission research lab, freezing spray wind tunnel, and various hydraulic, materials testing, structure, soils and environmental labs. Computer facilities include SUN and CAD workstations, and a range of advanced test equipment.
The new $56 million Engineering and Information Technology Complex is now complete.

 Admissions  study in america

Domestic students applying for direct entry or as a mature student to the UofM's Faculty of Engineering must submit a $75 fee with their application by May 1 for September entry. If applying from University 1 or another university, the fee is $60. International students must submit a $100 fee. Domestic students with an 85 per cent average in high school chemistry, mathematics and physics are admitted directly into first- year engineering. Those with 60 per cent or better in each of chemistry, mathematics and physics, but with an average below 85 per cent in these three subjects, may take a schedule of required engineering courses and then transfer to one of the six engineering programs. A grade point average of 2.00 or C over eight or more courses is required for transfer, although some programs are competitive and require a higher average.
Students whose first language is other than English, should mail English-language proficiency scores directly to the university no later than July 15. Acceptable English-language qualifications include 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, 6.5 on the IELTS, 80 on the MELAB, and CanTEST scores of 4.0 in speaking and writing.
International students are required by university regulation to obtain complete health insurance coverage, available at an approximate cost of $500 per year.
All continuing engineering students are eligible for scholarships based on academic achievement in their studies at the UofM. More than 150 scholarships and bursaries are awarded annually to undergraduate engineering students. Financial assistance for first-year international students is limited.

Support for International Students  study in america

The UofM's International Student Orientation Program introduces international students to Canadian culture, housing options, transportation, banking, immigration policies and university regulations.
The Host Family Program matches newly arrived students with Canadian families for a few days to help students with their initial adjustment to life in Winnipeg.
On-campus accommodation is available in four residences. Application should be made early to ensure a place.
Overseas students are encouraged to inquire about Commonwealth Scholarships and Government of Canada awards. Alternatively, they can directly contact the Canadian International Development Agency. International students may work on campus without employment authorization. In addition, Citizenship and Immigration Canada, the Province of Manitoba and University of Manitoba have entered into an agreement that allows international students who are enrolled in full- time studies at the UofM to apply for a permit to work off-campus.
Among the other services available for international students are counselling at the International Centre for Students, as well as intermediate and advanced language instruction courses at the on-campus English Language Centre.
