|
The Department of Science at Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC) offers an extensive range of science courses, which are transferable to universities in Alberta, Canada and across North America. These courses provide over 100 program options in disciplines such as biology, chemistry, engineering, computing science, mathematics and statistical sciences, physical sciences and natural resources management. GPRC offers a University Transfer Program that permits students to complete the first two years or up to 60 credits, of the University of Alberta's Bachelor of Science (BSc) Program. The preprofessional program also provides GPRC students with the requirements needed for admission to professional programs at other universities in Alberta and Canada. In the U of A's Faculty of Science BSc program, students can obtain a BSc General, BSc Specialization or BSc Honours. Majors include biology, chemistry, computing, mathematics and statistical sciences, forestry, physics and engineering. The major requires 36 to 48 credits of coursework specified for the area with no more than 18 credits at the junior level. A minor can be chosen from one of the science areas and requires 24 to 36 credits in courses specified for the area with no more than 12 credits at the junior level. Minors can be selected from the Faculty of Arts. GPRC students may complete up to two years (90 credits) toward the Bachelor of Science in Natural Resource Management, transferring to the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). Majors in either Forestry or Wildlife and Fisheries are available in this collaborative program at GPRC. The BSc in kinesiology is a transfer program in which students complete 60 credits at GPRC within four semesters. The total degree requirement is 120 credits and is completed at the U of A's Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation. Students may transfer to the U of A in either the second or third year of study, depending on whether they have completed 30 or 60 credits at GPRC. A competitive grade point average is essential for transfer consideration. Kinesiology graduates are eligible to pursue careers in active rehabilitation and exercise therapy, ergonomics, active health and fitness, biomedical applications, rehabilitation equipment and technology and research. Students enrolled in GPRC's University Transfer Program can prepare themselves for completion studies in other fields such as: Agricultural and Resource Economics, Agricultural Business Management, Agriculture or Food Business Management, Animal Biology, Animal Science, Bioinformatics, Biological Sciences, Cell Biology, Crop Science, Earth and Atmospheric Science Geology, Environmental and Conservation Sciences, Environmental Physical Science, Family Ecology, Food Business Management, Food Science and Technology, Forest Business Management, Forestry, Forestry Management or Forest Resources, Geophysics, Human Ecology, Immunology and Infection, Mathematics and Economics, Mathematics and Finance, Microbiology, Molecular Genetics, Northern Studies, Nutrition and Food Sciences, Paleontology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Psychology, Physiology and Developmental Biology, Plant Biology, Range and Pasture Management, Sustainable Agricultural Systems, and Textiles, Clothing and Culture. Students can also work towards a combined degree in science and education that culminates in a Bachelor of Science with a specialization in science and education, and a Bachelor of Education in secondary education. |

The Department of Science at GPRC has eight teaching laboratories. Three labs are dedicated to chemistry, two to biology and one each to physical sciences, earth sciences and forestry. The chemistry labs are equipped for the study of organic, inorganic, analytical and physical chemistry. The two biology labs are equipped with a teaching microscope for each student, as well as an extensive collection of prepared microscope slides and diverse collection of preserved biological specimens. The physics lab is supplied with PCs for use in data manipulation. The earth sciences lab houses an impressive collection of rocks, minerals and fossilized animal and plant remains. Fossil specimens have been acquired from around the world, including Alberta. |

Admission to the BSc in Kinesiology requires at least 70 per cent in the following courses: biology 30 or physical education 30; chemistry 30; pure mathematics 30; physics 30; and English 30 with a grade of at least 60 per cent. Application for admission to the BSc Honours programs is normally made following completion of the first year or 30 credits, of coursework. A competitive grade point average of 2.7 or better, depending on the subject area is required. Application to GPRC can be made online.
