Kwantlen University and Chilean University to Continue Exchanges and Develop Joint Research Projects until 2012
The presidents of Kwantlen University College and Chile's Universidad Arturo Prat (UNAP) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will continue the cooperative agreement by the two universities until 2012. The scope of the agreement is to develop intensive joint activities and programs in areas of horticulture, nursing, criminology, transborder studies, English and Spanish language training and English immersion where it is feasible and desirable for both universities. The proposed activities may include the development of a joint master's degree in English language instruction, research, curriculum development, faculty and student exchanges, and short-term training for faculty and students. "This is what leading teaching-led, regional universities do," said Skip Triplett, Kwantlen president. "We are developing collaborative partnerships to increase the range of international education options for our faculty and students. This MOU enables them to research, study and work in a different culture, thereby preparing themselves, and equipping our region, to thrive in a competitive global marketplace." Universities are places where ideas are shared about teaching and learning. Kwantlen's strong relationship with UNAP will lead to joint programs and curricula that will benefit both institutions. In addition, UNAP hopes to tap into Kwantlen's expertise in developing undergraduate programs that meet the needs of regional and international employment markets and allow students to bridge between citations, certificates, diplomas and degrees as their skills and interests develop. The relationship between Kwantlen and UNAP began when Kwantlen Spanish faculty Patricio Ramirez, who also holds a degree in chemistry, took a one-year educational leave to teach at UNAP. In addition to teaching chemistry, Ramirez, who is a native of Chile, organized English language workshops for UNAP chemistry faculty. This led to a visit by UNAP representatives to Kwantlen, a visit by Kwantlen representatives to UNAP, and more recently to the possibility of offering of an intensive Kwantlen summer Spanish program at UNAP in 2008. "It's been amazing to see the relationship between our two universities strengthen and grow over the last seven years," said Ramirez. "In particular, a possible partnership between Kwantlen and the Ministry of Education in Santiago to assist the "English Opens Doors" project that aims to enhance the learning of English in Chilean rural schools." Kwantlen has already sent two Spanish program students to volunteer with "English Opens Doors" this summer.

New Loyalist College Program Starts this September to Improve English as a Second Language Skills
In September students for whom English is a second or additional language can improve their skills by enrolling in Loyalist's new English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Certificate Program. The 30-week Ontario College Certificate program provides the option of either a September or January start date. It is designed to improve the students' English language skills, preparing them to advance successfully to further academic programs or additional professional development. "Many employers in Canada and around the world require that their employees are proficient in the English language," explained Tom Malloy, Dean of Skills Training, Access, Continuing Education and Satellite Services at Loyalist College. "The EAP program prepares individuals for these career opportunities and will ease their transition into further studies at college or university." The program places emphasis on effective writing, reading, listening and speaking comprehension. The curriculum focuses on formal English development for academic and professional purposes as well as the more relaxed nuances of functional daily usage. Field trips and individual projects give participants the opportunity to plan and prepare for their chosen professional area of study. "Loyalist College is a great place to improve my English in a typical Canadian town," said Hye Jin Kim, from South Korea. "Loyalist is a small college so the chances of speaking Korean are minimal. My professors can really take the time to give me personal attention while I focus on my studies."
