University of Prince Edward Island: International Advisor Recognized for Commitment to Students
Joy Ikede, International Student Advisor at the University of Prince Edward Island, has received regional recognition for her commitment to student services. At the 2007 Atlantic Association of College and University Student Services Conference she was presented with The Carol's Creed Award. This annual award was established in 2003 in recognition of the outstanding dedication of the late Carol Jordan who was a long-serving member of the student services staff at the University of New Brunswick. The award is presented to an individual who has shown infectious enthusiasm for the profession of services to students through a commitment to health, well being, love, and laughter in her connection with students and colleagues on a personal level. When she accepted the award, Ikede said, Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that I would be given such an honour. I did not have the opportunity to meet Carol in person, but from all accounts, she was quite a lady. My prayer is that having received this award, I am able to honour her memory by doing my best in my job. Joy Ikede provides information, support, and advice to the increasing numbers of international students attending UPEI. She acts as a resource in navigating the legal, academic, and cultural challenges of living as a student in a new country.

Simon Fraser University: Dinner for 500 on the Mall
More than 500 professionals from around the world dedicated to serving international students as they make choices about post-secondary education were themselves served dinner July 13 at SFU's Burnaby campus Convocation Mall. The banquet - one of the largest ever held on the mall - was part of the 2007 Overseas Association for College Admission Counseling (OACAC) conference, co-hosted in Vancouver this year by SFU, UBC and the Emily Carr Institute. The OACAC brings together student recruiters, primary and secondary-school counsellors, independent counsellors, college admission and financial-aid officers, enrollment managers and organizations engaged in guiding students through the secondary to higher-education transition process. "We hosted the awards-dinner part of the conference and we also hosted an event on Monday (July 9) for about 40 participants who specifically wanted more information on SFU while they were in town," says SFU student recruiter Lynda Walker.

Memorial University and British University Strengthen Partnership
Memorial University of Newfoundland has re-affirmed its commitment to continue developing collaborations with a U.K. university. On Wednesday, July 25, President Axel Meisen and Dr. Paul Curran, vice-chancellor of Bournemouth University, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to expand an existing partnership. The signing ceremony was held on the St. John's campus. Bournemouth is located on the south coast of England in the county of Dorset with one of its two main campuses located in Poole - an area with strong connections to this province. The purpose of the MOU is to establish the general areas and activities in which Bournemouth and Memorial will seek to collaborate, recognizing the historic 400-year-old connection between this province and that region of England. With more than 15,000 students, Bournemouth is similar in size to Memorial and has a fine reputation for its research and programs. In addition to a business school, the university also has a media centre, law school and school of design, engineering and computing. According to the MOU, the two universities will look to collaborate on areas such as research work, including joint applications for research funding, staff exchanges and secondments. They will also examine ways of collaborating in the scholarly activities related to the 400th anniversary of the founding of the settlement at Cooper's Cove (Cupids) by John Guy in 2010. The MOU is for three years.

Emily Carr Institute: Art in Paris - Celebrate the Power of Women
A multimedia 25-year reunion show from four artists: Jan Bell, Joanna Kobylka, Patricia Maré, Leza Macdonald. Their 1982 multimedia group graduation show at the Charles H. Scott Gallery was a celebration of the close relationships nurtured at The Emily Carr Institute in Vancouver Canada. The women sculpted, painted, photographed and imagined the future of a friendship not yet traveled. Each depicted the others in their individual mediums. 25 years later - Bell, Kobylka, Maré and Macdonald are together again. They will illustrate their individual journeys that have been supported by the strength of art and sustained by the power of friendship. In Paris, these four women will define their place as artists in our global home.

International Counsellors Receive Royal Treatment at Malaspina University-College
Twenty-seven post-secondary education counsellors from around the world visited Malaspina University-College last week and received a personal tour of the campus and royal treatment over a salmon barbecue. "The counsellors assist students from prestigous international high schools in deciding what post-secondary institutions to attend," said Qaqish. Kwantlen Eagles Men's Basketball plays a touring team from Mexico
Kwantlen University College Eagles Men's Basketball team played an exhibition game against a touring Mexican basketball club at the Surrey Campus gymnasium. Despite the loss by the Mexican team, 88-47, there was an energy and passion that could be felt by everyone who attended the game. "This was a great cultural opportunity for our team," said Bernie Love, Kwantlen men's basketball head coach. "That's the primary thing, but it also gave us a chance to showcase our new recruits and to play as a team before our season starts." This is the first organized North American tour for this Mexican team. The team, consisting of 18-22 year olds from Puerto Vallarta, is at the tail end of their Lower Mainland / Seattle tour. In addition to the stop at Kwantlen, they played the UBC Thunderbirds and Capilano Blues.
