Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board: Schools Welcome Speakers on Day of Non-Violence October 2
Hundreds of students in 10 Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board schools will focus on peace when they welcome local presenters on October 2, the United Nations International Day of Non-violence. The presentations will involve Grades 6 and 12 students from Chemong, Kawartha Heights, Queen Mary, Westmount, Armour Heights, Keith Wightman and Roger Neilson Public Schools, and Peterborough Collegiate, Lakefield District Secondary School and Crestwood SS. The presentations for the International Day of Non-violence Project were organized by eight Peterborough-area peace and social justice groups including Kawartha Ploughshares, Amnesty International (Kawartha Chapter), and the Kawartha World Issues Centre, among others. "We felt that a presentation about non-violence would fit in with the specific goal of safe schools, and with the larger curriculum goal of teaching non-violence," says Joyce Barrett, Chairperson of Kawartha Ploughshares. "The speakers will engage students in discussions about using non-violence as an effective tool in problem solving."
"We certainly welcome this opportunity to reinforce our year-round focus on character development, peace and non-violence," says Sylvia Terpstra, Director of Education. "It's yet another example of the community partnerships that benefit our students and support our mission of educating students to excel in learning, to succeed in life and to enrich our communities." Students, staff, families and community members are also welcome to attend a free screening of the film Gandhi, at 6:30 p.m. at Showplace Peterborough, on October 2. The screening was organized by the local Day of Non-violence Committee.

Students at 41 Kawartha Pine Ridge Schools "Vote" In Provincial Election
Local students of all ages will be able to meet local candidates, learn about the issues, and "vote" in the October 10 provincial election, thanks to the Student Vote program. Thirty elementary schools and 11 secondary schools throughout the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board have registered with Student Vote, a national program that encourages active citizenship among students. Participating schools run parallel election programs, giving students a hands-on, realistic look at the democratic process. Teachers lead students in non-partisan research, discussions and projects about the candidates, the platforms of each political party, and the issues involved. Students even receive ballots and cast their votes for the candidate of their choice - just as if they were at the official polling stations. Each participating school sends the results of its students' votes to the Student Vote organization, which, in turn, releases the province-wide student results to the news media. "We have been pleased to support the Student Vote program since its inception during the 2003 provincial election," says Director of Education Sylvia Terpstra. "It's a wonderful way to encourage our students to become active citizens. We believe that we must do everything we can to engage our students in the democratic process, from a young age, in hopes that they become life-long voters." Student Vote is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that has the official support of trustee, teacher, principal and student trustee organizations across the province. "Our mission is to move students into active citizenship," notes Taylor Gunn, Chief Election Officer for Student Vote. "We provide teachers with resources, election materials and suggested activities that build critical thinking and decision-making skills among students. If we want young Canadians to grow up into active citizens, then shouldn't we give them a way to practice first?"
