Delta School District: Proposed Equestrian Academy Coming September 2008
On Wednesday, September 25th, the Delta School District had a very successful turnout for the first public meeting regarding the proposed Equestrian Academy that is planned to be up and running for September 2008. Over 100 interested parents and students from all parts of the Delta School District and neighbouring districts attended to discuss the formation of the exciting academy. Vice Chairperson Teresa Townsley and Superintendent Steve Cardwell opened the meeting and welcomed all those in attendance. Trustee Dale Saip explained the history of "Choice" programs in Delta and described the successful South Delta and Burnsview Hockey and Seaquam Girls' Softball Academies. Vice Chairperson Townsley led the discussion on why the Delta School District was considering creating an Equestrian Academy and invited questions from the audience. Assistant Superintendent Garnet Ayres spoke to the process that the District will be following to create the academy and stressed that the academy will have a strong academic foundation. Vice Chairperson Townsley advised that the District was just beginning the planning and emphasized that to ensure the success of the academy there will be an ongoing need for public input and consultation. Each person who attended was asked to fill in a questionnaire. The questionnaire is available in pdf format and will be available to complete online in a couple of days. If you are printing out the questionnaire, please fax the completed form to: 604.952.5375.
