Lower Canada College: Impressive Finish for Debaters at Oxford Union Championships
The LCC debating team travelled to England over the March Break to compete in the prestigious Oxford Union Championships. The team of Madeleine Ballard and Caroline Wagner won the right to attend based on their 2nd place finish at the North American Championships last November. Fresh off their national championship victory the week before, they were in fine form at Oxford, debating against the British teams in their country, with their format, and on with their topics and judges. After three rounds, the LCC team was sitting in the top five, out of 80, and had a chance to become the first Canadian team to make it to the finals. However, they came up just a bit short in a tough final round, finishing with an outstanding result of 8th place. The most impressive result was the individual standings. No Canadian in the ten years of the competition had ever finished in the top 10. However, that changed with a remarkable performance by Caroline Wagner, who finished in 7th place.
