Malaspina International High School Student Receives Major Scholarship
Sixteen-year-old Fiona Wilson is well on the way to a promising future. The Malaspina International High School student received an $18,000 President's Centennial Scholarship and a $2,000 Entrance Scholarship to Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario. Wilson will enroll in the Honours Arts program and plans to major in Archeology. She's part of the 2007 graduating class at Malaspina International High School (MIHS), located at Malaspina University-College's Nanaimo campus. "Fiona is an outstanding student who attained a 3.93 Grade Point Average, including scores of 5/5 for Advanced Placement Psychology and 4/5 for Advanced Placement English Language and Composition," said Principal Tom Lewis. "The unique quarter system timetable used at MIHS allowed Fiona to complete her graduation requirements early. She just received the good news of the substantial scholarship for studies beginning in September 2007. We're all very proud of her. She has a bright future." Lewis said previous students at MIHS have received substantial scholarships, which is a credit to the school but "especially to the hard work and dedication of our students." Wilson is the daughter of John and Jennifer Wilson of Lantzville. "Of course we're very proud of Fiona," said her father. "The quarter system at Malaspina International High School was the big attraction for Fiona in choosing to complete her high school there. She was able to focus on one or two subjects for 10-week intervals, write the exams and move on to the next subjects." Wilson also completed Spanish 200 at Malaspina University-College for credit during her final year in high school. "Our close proximity to Malaspina University-College is a big advantage for our high school students," added Lewis. "Many students are able to integrate university courses with their high school education." Malaspina International High School accepts Canadian and international high school students, and offers the grade 10 to 12 British Columbia graduation program.

Sedbergh School: Canadian Ski Marathon
Sedbergh's performance at this year's Canadian Ski Marathon was stellar. With less snow than most would prefer, Sedbergh's Maxi Team of 91 (comprising students, staff and board members) skied a cumulative total of 5,674 km, enough to ski across Canada one after the other! Bronze silver and gold distance medals were received by students from grades 7 to 12 and staff too; and our Coureurs de Bois skiers also had excellent performances. Sedbergh's success was due in part to the support crews in their chase vehicles, warming chilled feet, waxing skis and feeding hungry skiers. Thanks to everyone who helped make this annual event a success!
