Surrey School District: District Employee Named Educator of the Year
Principal of the district’s Career Education program, Vicki Munn, has been recognized for her leadership to the Vancouver construction industry. The Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) has named Munn Educator of the Year at their annual Awards of Excellence ceremony.
“This award is the Vancouver construction industry's way of recognizing the outstanding work Vicki has done and leadership she has provided in our industry,” says Brian Martin, chair of the VRCA Awards Committee.
Munn has worked closely with the construction industry in initiating trades training at the secondary school level over the years. She played a significant role in launching the ACE IT program, an industry training program that enables high school students to gain skills required to enter a career in trades, or to pursue further specialized post-secondary training. The program was first launched in Surrey and later expanded province-wide.
“This award is representative of everyone who has worked so hard to increase the awareness of the potential of pursuing a career in trades,” says Munn. “I cannot over emphasize the fact that it takes a strategic plan and teamwork to accomplish what our school district has accomplished in this field.
“I'm extremely proud of the staff, students and community members I've had the privilege of working with over the years. It is through their hard work and dedication that our students have had the opportunity of advancing their educations in trades,” adds Munn.
She has also been involved in organizing the annual “Trading Up Fair and Exhibition” that educates students and parents about the benefits of a career in the trades.
The VRCA’s Awards of Excellence started 19 years ago to recognize outstanding construction work and outstanding people in the industry. The VRCA is the largest regional construction association in British Columbia. It represents both union and open shop construction companies and suppliers and is in its 76th year of operation.
