Surrey School District: Sullivan Heights’ Robot the Best ‘Puck Handler’ in B.C.
The Sullivan Heights Robotics team has fulfilled a dream of creating the top secondary school robot in the province - the team has won gold at the 2008 B.C. Skills Robotics Competition. The team designed, programmed and fabricated “SHIM”, which stands for “Sullivan Heights Intelligent Machine”. For the competition, SHIM had to gather four hockey pucks from different areas and transport them through numerous obstacles, including stairs, ramps and tight, blind corners before depositing the cargo in designated spaces at the end of the course. The competition was not without suspense and the unexpected. After an initial, flawless test run, hopes and excitement were high. However, during a pre-match test of the robot, a cloud of black smoke burst from somewhere near a key motor controller circuit board. Smoke from electronic components often means disaster, but as the start of the match loomed near, the frantic team disassembled SHIM and still could not determine the cause. With no time left, the students reassembled the robot and held their breath as they turned on the robot. Thankfully, SHIM was fully functional; otherwise, the team would have been headed home without participating in a single, official match. In the end, not only did the team earn gold, but SHIM was also the only robot to achieve four perfect-score runs. With the assistance of the team’s sponsors; Honda Canada, Intralox, Future Shop, Kodak Canada, Sullivan Heights Parents Advisory Council, Red Line Pro Manufacturing, and AirArms Industrial Ltd., the students are looking forward to the Skills Canada Nationals in Calgary and hoping to win gold so they can compete in the World Skills competition in September.

Golden Hills School Division #75: Paleontology Program Wins Prestigious Canadian Museums Association Award
Drumheller High School and the Royal Tyrrell Museum will receive the Museums and Schools Partnership award at the Canadian Museums Association Annual Conference in Victoria, B.C. on April 10, 2008. The awards committee, in collaboration with the Canadian Teachers’ Federation and the Canadian College of Teachers, unanimously agreed that “the paleontology submission met all the criteria for outstanding achievement.” Veronique Chikuru, Program Coordinator for the Chair of the Awards Peer Review committee stated, “The integration and long term vision make this project a unique example of learning opportunities that museums and schools can create by working together. This nomination stands out.” Mr. Tom Zariski, Principal, will attend the prestigious ceremony along with Mr. Earle Wiebe, a Science Educator from the Royal Tyrrell Museum. Mr. Colin Regamey, Distance Learning Coordinator at the Tyrrell and Mr. Jason Rasmussen, developed the course content which was piloted last year using video conferencing to include students from Standard and Acme Schools. “It was quite a challenge to use the technology,” said Mr. Rasmussen who was honored at the Calgary Educational Partnerships Foundations’ Mayors’ Gala last year. “The locally developed course in paleontology responds to student interests and takes advantage of a world-class facility within our jurisdiction’s boundaries,” commented Dianne McBeth, Superintendent of Schools. The jurisdiction reported that the next level of paleontology is currently being developed for implementation this fall and plans are also underway to provide opportunities for high school students throughout the province to include paleontology in their studies.
