University of Prince Edward Island Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island I'm glad I chose to come to UPEI, because I encountered a welcoming campus community where tuition was affordable and much financial support was offered. I was able to do my Biology Honours in aquaculture through the cooperation between the AVC and UPEI and will leave here feeling proud to be a UPEI graduate. Prince Edward Island - Capital City: Charlottetown Prince Edward Island (PEI) is just 280 kilometres from tip to tip and so it is quite possible to explore every nook and cranny of this historic island. Rich soil and a temperate climate make PEI an ideal place for mixed farming. Half of its land is under cultivation, earning it the nickname “the Garden Province.” It is renowned for its red soil, sand dunes and 800 kilometres of beaches. (PEI) In 2006, the population of Prince Edward Island was 135,851. Charlottetown, with a population of 32,174, is the island’s only urban centre. PEI’s population is quite young — about 38 per cent of the residents are under the age of 25. The island is also renowned for the Green Gables House, the inspiration for L.M. Montgomery’s famous Anne of Green Gables stories. Cycling and hiking are popular pastimes in PEI and are great ways of exploring the island’s 29 provincial parks. The white sand beaches scattered across the island are among the most spectacular and unspoiled in North America. Sailing is also a popular activity, as is ice sailing in the winter. The celebrated completion of the Confederation Bridge allows easy access to this incredible island.
