Nova Scotia - Capital City: Halifax Nova Scotia’s 580-kilometre peninsula is surrounded by four bodies of water: the Atlantic Ocean, the Bay of Fundy, the Northumberland Strait and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Its geographic location, together with large, ice-free, deep-water harbours, has been a key factor in the province’s economic development. Over 80 per cent of Nova Scotia’s population of 938,000 trace their ancestry either wholly or partially to the British Isles. Those with French origin rank second; 18 per cent of residents have some French ancestry. The largest concentrations of people are found in the Halifax metropolitan area, which has a population of 350,000.
This province has a rich history, strongly connected to the legends of the seas that surround it. Historical fishing villages and lighthouses can be discovered in almost every part of the province, and you can explore these sights by taking one of the many tours offered along the different routes. You can visit the Halifax Citadel and the reconstructed Fortress of Louisberg, or experience a reenactment of the epic battles fought during the early formation of Canada. If it is scenery you enjoy, a visit to any of Nova Scotia’s charming ports will be a delight. You will never forget a drive through the lovely Cabot Trail, which winds along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean around Cape Breton Island.
