Manitoba - Capital City: Winnipeg
With an economy based on minerals and agriculture, Manitoba is one of the three Prairie provinces and is located in the centre of Canada, bordered by Ontario, Saskatchewan, the Nunavut Territory, Hudson Bay and the United States. Manitoba is an important centre for a number of ethnic groups. There are over 700 organizations in the province that support new Canadians and Canadian immigrants. About 60 per cent of Manitoba’s one million people live in metropolitan Winnipeg, the provincial capital. The name Manitoba likely comes from the Cree words “Manitou bou,” which mean “the narrows of the Great Spirit.”
Manitoba is known as the “sunshine capital of Canada,” which complements the beauty of the numerous lakes and parks of the province. Hecla Provincial Park, Riding Mountain National Park and Oak Hammond Marsh & Conservation Centre are just a few of the places you might want to visit in this province. Winnipeg is a vibrant cultural centre and home to the world-famous Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Folklorama, which takes place each summer in Winnipeg, celebrates the traditions of the many immigrant groups that make up Canada.
