ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TESTS
English language proficiency tests measure a student's level of English language skills. There are several tests commonly administered by schools, and which test slightly different skills. The main English language proficiency tests for international students studying in Canada are

  • CAEL: Canadian Academic English Language Assessment
  • TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language

  • TOEIC: Test of English for International Communication

  • IELTS: International English Language Testing System

These tests can often be taken online or at official test centres around the world. The scores from these English language proficiency tests are used by educational institutions to determine what level of class the student is ready for. Some schools require certain language test scores to qualify for admission.

Not all schools in Canada accept all the tests mentioned above. Therefore, it's important that students find out which language proficiency tests are used and accepted by the schools they are applying to. English language proficiency tests may be given only on certain dates, so it's also important to leave enough time for the schools to get the scores by the appropriate deadlines.
