Capilano College’s ESL Program Wins National Nomination for Outstanding Performance
Capilano’s English as a Second Language program has been nominated for the 2007 Lyn Howes Award, presented annually by the Canada Language Council. “The award is for outstanding performance and innovation in the delivery of programs and services for the Canadian language training industry,” said Jay Jamieson, CLC’s accreditation services manager. “Specifically, Capilano’s (ESL) program has been nominated for its comprehensive and effective curriculum review process.” Capilano offers ESL programs at six different levels and the institution serves students from 45 counties worldwide. It also provides a complete range of additional preparatory studies, including the free Adult Basic Education diploma program, the Alternative Career Training certificate program, and the Pre-Occupational Skills Training certificate program, to name a few. “This nomination confirms what we’ve known for years – that our preparatory programs are among the best in the country,” said James Cooke, vice-president, Student and Institutional Support. “We’re thrilled with the nomination and I’m especially excited for our faculty who work hard to make learners from other countries feel welcome and at home in Canada.” Lyn Howes was a founding member of the CLC who took a lead role in the development of the Council's original standards. The Council is Canada's premier language organization that, for the past 25 years, has continued to advance standards and promote excellence in English and French language training in Canada. Recognized internationally, it ensures that member programs meet its rigorous standards and are committed to upholding them. Capilano College serves the communities of the Lower Mainland, Howe Sound, and the Sunshine Coast through campuses in North Vancouver, Squamish and Sechelt. Enrolment totals 6,800 students in credit programs each term with an additional 7,000 people taking non-credit courses annually. Capilano offers a complete range of preparatory courses, university transfer courses, business and management studies, creative and applied arts programs, health and human services programs, plus a range of services in support of student learning and success. Credentials awarded include bachelor degrees, associate degrees, post-baccalaureate diplomas, advanced diplomas, diplomas, certificates and statements of completion.

Langara College: Greater Vancouver School Districts See a Long-Term Vision with University Quality Alliance
When Langara College's International Education Director, Gordon McNeil, first envisioned a clear path for international students to move successfully through to a degree at a top Canadian university, it started at Langara. With the amount of services available to international students both through the popular Langara PLUS program and through the structure of Langara's University Transfer (UT) program, students are provided with the tools necessary to make effective decisions in achieving a respected Canadian degree. The idea of a clear path, however, doesn't start at Langara, but rather years earlier during the high school years. The Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, West Vancouver, and Langley school districts have joined the esteemed University Quality Alliance (UQA) Program in partnering to provide students with the assistance they need to make it through the Canadian education system to reach their academic goals. With strong curricula and supportive International Education departments, each of these school districts provide international students with integration into local schools, ESL programs, and complete services from homestay to counselling. Upon graduation, students are encouraged to attend the first two years of their Bachelor's degree at Langara, and take the time necessary to make an informed decision where to complete their degree.
