Each year several thousand international students attend one of Alberta's public or private high schools. And for good reason!
Alberta's school divisions - 42 Public School Boards, 17 Separate School Boards, 5 French School Boards, 12 Charter School Boards and numerous private boarding schools provide a safe and culturally diverse environment in which international students may learn.
Alberta's high schools offer a range of programming designed to prepare students for college. The Alberta government-approved curriculum and government certified teachers ensure a high quality learning experience with an Alberta Highs School Diploma accepted around the world for admission to post-secondary education. As an international student you are able to choose chose from a diverse curriculum ranging from core courses in English, Math, Natural Sciences and Social Studies to elective courses in areas such as Fine Arts, Band, Choir, Theatre Studies, Sports Science, Modern Languages, and technical subjects and academic in fields of study such as science and technology and fine and performing art. Choices range from suburban to suburban school environments and homestay to boarding school accommodations.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, offered by many Alberta high schools is a two-year course of study offering academically motivated students a comprehensive, rigorous approach to learning in Grades 11 and 12 which equips the with the skills that will make them successful in an increasingly competitive world. Graduates of the IB Diploma Programme are accepted for advanced placement in Alberta universities and colleges and around the world. As well, most Alberta high schools offer Advanced Placement (AP) courses which are universally accepted by Alberta's post-secondary institutions.
All Alberta high schools that accept international students also provide extensive support, including English as a Second Language courses and tutorials, through school and grade placement, counseling, support and assessments, student orientations and newsletters, school support visits and monitoring of academics, attendance and behaviour, translation and interpretation services, assistance with student permit renewals and post secondary information sessions are also provided.
