Accreditation of FSL programs in Alberta means the school or program has been evaluated by an independent, professional certification agency.
Accreditation of French as a Second Language (FSL) programs across Canada is carried out by several independent organizations. The most important are:
Languages Canada: The premier language accreditation group in Canada. It offers accreditation to universities, colleges and qualifying private language programs and colleges.
Canada Language Council / Le Conseil des Langues du Canada: A major Canadian language school organization, Canada Language Council oversees both the public and private sector in both ESL and FSL language instruction.
Another form of quality assurance is membership in national associations. For example, the Canadian Association of Private Language Schools (CAPLS) is a national organization representing English and French private language schools across Canada. They do not offer official accreditation, but institutions can become members of CAPLS and to do so must adhere to certain regulations and standards of quality.
Accreditation of FSL programs may also depend on the kind of school offering them. For instance, career colleges often offer FSL programs, and these schools must be registered and licensed by the education ministry of their province. A private career college in Alberta may choose to become a member of an external association, such as the National Association of Career Colleges (NACC), and each province also has an affiliated career college association. As well, career colleges may be accredited by the Canadian Education and Training Accreditation Commission (CETAC).
Why Accreditation?
Accreditation assures you and your parents that the school's programs are delivered by qualified faculty and are up-to-date. A credential from an accredited FSL school or program can help make you more competitive on the job market, and will protect you from scams and substandard instruction.
